What happens if I don't raise the $2,500 minimum by the date of the ride?

First, please feel free to call or email us if you need further advice on how to fundraise successfully. If you are unable to raise the $2,500 fundraising minimum by September 1st, you can self pledge the remainder of the balance. If you continue to fundraise after the event and meet the minimum, you can be reimbursed for your self-pledge, up to three months after Brita Climate Ride 2009. In order to ride in Brita Climate Ride 2009, we ask that all riders meet the minimum by the deadline.

If my company does gift matching, is there any way I can get that matching amount credited towards my fundraising amount?

As long as the matching gift comes in by September 15th, then yes, it counts toward your goal. Be sure to check how often your company sends out matches— some only do it annually.

What are the beneficiaries’ addresses and tax EIN #’s?

All proceeds from Brita Climate Ride 2009 will benefit Clean Air – Cool Planet (Tax ID #04-3492988) and Focus the Nation (Tax ID #93-1271487). Your gift is tax deductible to the extent allowed by the law.

How does the online donation software work?

Check out the green box on the homepage of the website. This is the area
where you can find all of the registration and donation related items.

When you register, the online software will lead you to create a personal
webpage that you can use for fundraising. Look at your webpage when you
have registered and it will explain how people can donate (and should help
to answer your questions). When you meet people you can ask them to visit
your webpage to donate (they can use a credit card). Or you can send a
link to your personal webpage in an email and then your friends can click
and donate. The donation software tracks and records all of your
donations.

There is also an "offline" donation form which people can use to send in a
check. While credit cards make it easy for people to donate quickly
online, more money goes to beneficiaries if they write a check (because of
credit card fees and software fees 3-5%). So, if you want to ask people
to write a check, print out a few offline forms. Also, the non-profit
taxpayer ID# is listed on the forms, so that donors can write off their
donation. Checks are made out to Clean Air – Cool Planet and sent to Climate
Ride (address is on the downloadable form).

Can I offset my CO2 emissions from my travel to and from the ride?

Of course! We encourage Climate Riders to purchase offsets for their travel. Click on the Cool Tags link or the Carbon Travel Calculator link below to get started!

Cool Tags Logo

Clif Bar has hooked up with NativeEnergy to create Cool Tags. They’re renewable wind energy credits that offset CO2 emissions. Each Cool Tag keeps an estimated 300 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the air. (That’s about how much you would generate driving 300 miles in an average car.)

>> Carbon Travel Calculator

Buy a Cool Tag. Stick it in your window.
Do what you can to live a little greener.
We’ll do the same.

Is Climate Ride purchasing carbon offsets?

Most definitely. Many thanks to Clif Bar for purchasing carbon offsets to cover our vehicles that provide support, safety and luggage transport for Brita Climate Ride 2009. Climate Ride is also offsetting all carbon associated with trip development prior to the event.

How do I get to NYC and home from DC?

There are several options including Amtrak, car sharing, and flying. We will publish a travel planner in June that has travel details. If you have a specific or pressing question, please email us at info@climateride.org.

TOP

When do I need to arrive in NYC?

More details will be available soon.

TOP

When should I plan to depart from DC?

More details will be available soon.

How do I get myself and my bike to NYC and home from DC?

While it's a lot to think about, it's not as hard as it seems! Options include shipping your bike via UPS to your hotel or our preferred bike shop in NY, sending it by train, or checking it as luggage on the plane— to the ride start in NYC and from the end in DC. Rest assured—we will have bike mechanics on hand to help you with bike assembly at the start and disassembly and boxing at the finish. If you are traveling to NY with a hard-shell bike case, you will be able to leave it with us in storage in NY or you can recover it in DC, as you prefer.

TOP

Do you have hotel suggestions for the nights in NYC and in DC?

Yes, we do. Our travel planner will be available in June. In it you will find a list of hotels that are near the registration and welcome event in NYC, and a list of hotels in DC.

What kind of support can I expect along the ride?

Your Brita Climate Ride 2009 includes the most experienced and highest quality support staff. All you need to do is ride. We’ll provide plenty of rest stops, snacks, healthy meals, restful camping locations, vehicle support (the “sag” wagon), bike mechanics, luggage transport, and showers. You can also expect an unlimited supply of camaraderie, encouragement and cheer!

TOP

What kind of bicycle do I need?

It’s very important that you have a bicycle that you will be comfortable riding for most of the day- up to six hours in the saddle. Talk to your local bike shop about proper bicycle fitting. Most people choose to ride road bicycles, but hybrid bicycles are fine. You may also ride a mountain bike, but consider putting “slick” tires on your wheels, as wide, knobby tires tend to move slower on paved roads.

TOP

For what am I responsible?

All riders need to bring a bicycle, helmet, tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, and a small suitcase or duffle containing clothes, toiletries and anything else necessary for five days on the road. In the Brita Climate Ride 2009 Travel Planner you will find suggestions from the pros on proper clothing, equipment, and packing for the ride. Climate Ride provides breakfast, dinner, and heavy snacks, which includes the cyclist's favorite on-the-road lunch--PB&J. We encourage you to enjoy a sit down lunch or indulge in a daily ice cream cone in the small towns along the way, so bring some extra cash. We'll tell you the good stops each day.

TOP

Where will we sleep?

We have selected the best camping locations along the route. When you arrive at camp, all you have to do is set up your tent and relax. If you would prefer not to camp, you will find a list of hotels and B&Bs in the Travel Planner that are near the camping locations. If you choose to use any of these indoor accommodations, you will be responsible for making your own reservations, arranging transport to and from the campground, and associated costs. Please contact us at info@climateride.org for more information.

TOP

What will we do in the evenings after riding all day?

Climate Ride has arranged for renowned authorities to meet us at camp in the evening to enlighten and inspire us about innovative sustainable technologies, climate science, and easy ways to reduce our carbon footprint. So you can kick back, hang out with your new friends and delve into fascinating topics! You receive all of this and a great night’s sleep.
